Interview On Making The Batteryless Cardiac Pacemaker Powered By An Automatic Watch Movement

Mr. Adrian Zurbuchen recently made world-wide headlines by proving that a cardiac pacemaker could be powered by the same mechanism that powers automatic mechanical wrist watches. The young PhD candidate at the University of Bern, Switzerland had a goal of trying to eliminate a major issue in the cardiology field, which was the fact that pacemakers require batteries to operate – batteries that inevitably lose power. The Swiss watch industry for many years has relied upon small eccentric weights in watch movements that move with the motion of one’s wrist to generate energy – first, by winding a mainspring in mechanical watches, and later, by generating an electrical current in electronic quartz watches.
